Good things in Vancouver

叔父さんがおされなディナーに連れて行ってくれました(T0T)。ここは三条御幸町の近くですが、この辺は私が京都の高校へ通っていた頃と較べて、とても変わっていました。

My uncle took me to a cool restaurant for dinner(T0T).  The restaurant is located near Sanjyo Gokoumachi but the neighbourhood changed so much from the time when I used to a high school nearby.

目に美しく、口に美味しいお料理でした。幸せな気分で、お店を出ると、叔父さんが、「じゃ、もう一軒一杯いこか？」と祇園に連れて行ってくれました。祇園で一番有名なお茶屋さん、「一力」の前で叔父さんが車を停めるとちょうど芸者さんがいました。

The dinner was delicious for my mouth and beautiful for my eyes.  We left the restaurant in a happy mood, then my uncle said, “Let’s go to a bar to have a drink” and he took us to Gion, an old district of Kyoto.  He stopped his car in front of the most famous tea house in Gion called Ichiriki and I saw one Geisha.

叔父さんの知り合いの方がやっていらっしゃるバーはこれまた、おされなバーでした。メニューはなく、自分がどんなカクテルを飲みたいかを言います。カクテルはIittala や Kosta Bodaの美しいグラスで運ばれて来ました。叔父さんに色んな所に連れて行ってもらえて興奮でした。叔父さん家族と一緒にとても幸せな時でした。

The bar that is ran by my uncle’s friend is also a cool bar. There was no menus, then you have to tell what kind of cocktail you would like to drink. The cocktails came in a beautiful glasses, like Iittala or Kosta Boda. I was so excited my uncle took me to many cool places. I had a very happy time being with my uncle’s family together.

日本での２日間はあっと言う間に終わりました。関西空港でバンクーバーへ帰る飛行機を待ちました。関西空港はイタリアの建築家、Renzo Pianoが設計しました。パリのPompidou Centreも彼の設計です。そういえば、似ていますね。

My 2 days stay in Japan was finished so quickly. I waited for an aeroplane to return to Vancouver at the Kansai airport. The airport is designed by an Italian architect, Renzo Piano. He also designed Ponpidou Centre in Paris. They both look similar.

日本に帰りました。関西空港から京都の叔母の家までMK Taxiを使いました。タクシーは８人乗りのミニバンで、乗り換えとかしなくていいので楽チンでした。片道３,０００円。２時間程で懐かしい京都市内に着きました。車から写真を撮りました。といってもあまり京都らしくない写真ですが。。。

I went back to Japan.  I took a MK taxi from the Kansai airport to my aunt’s house in Kyoto.   The taxi was a mini van which you share with about 7 other people.  It was a very easy travel since I didn’t need to change trains or buses.  It costed 3,000 yen ($30).  After about 2 hours, I arrived at my familiar city, Kyoto.  I took pictures from the mini van.  Please note I only took photos of residential areas of the city. 

MK Taxiはサービスがとても良く感動しました。運転手さんに写真撮ってもいいですかと聞きました。写真を撮られるのは初めてですと運転手さんはカメラに向ってスマイルしてくれました。

I was so impressed with MK taxi’s service.  I asked the driver if I could take a picture of him.  He said this is my first time to be asked for photos then he smiled at my camera. 

 

到着して速攻食べに行った物はというと。。。やっぱし回転寿司（ウィズ　ビアー）。

The thing I ate as soon as I arrived was… Of course Kaiten sushi (with beer).  (Kaiten means “rotating” and normally 1 plate costs $1)

 

 

 

 

Zero 7はイギリス出身 のHenry Binns と Sam Hardekerによって結成された。ダウンテンポな音楽で、数人の素晴らしい声を持つボーカルを起用する。今年５月に３枚目のアルバム「Garden」↑が出た。今まで同様とても良い。彼らは９月２日（土）バンクーバーにやってくる。滅茶苦茶楽しみにしています。

ニューアルバムで一番好きな曲はこれ！

Zero 7 is consisted of a duo, Henry Binns and Sam Hardeker from England.  Their music is downtempo and they use several vocals who has wonderful voice.  They released the third album called “Garden” ↑in May this year.  It’s very good as the previous ones.  They are coming to Vancouver on Saturday, September 2nd and I am extremely looking foward to it.

釜山は人口3.7百万人の韓国で２番目に大きい都市です。釜山はまたバンクーバーの姉妹都市でもあります。

仕事を終えて、夜は宮廷料理をご馳走になりました。韓国で視聴率５８％を出した「チャングムの誓い（英語では”Jewel in the Palace”だそうです。）」という、宮廷の生活を背景にしたドラマがあり、日本で放映され、宮廷料理の人気が高くなってきているようですね。宮廷料理は何十種類の料理が次から次へと運ばれてきます。私の場合は20種類も出てきました。

Busan is the second biggest city in South Korea with population of 3.7 million people. Busan is also a sister city of Vancouver.

After work, we were invited for dinner, the traditional Korean palace cuisine. This type of cuisine is getting more popular in Japan. It’s because a drama called “Jewel in the Palace” which showed the life style of a Korean dynasty 500 years ago. This drama recorded 58% of audience rate in Korea and got popular in Japan as well. This cuisine brings so many dishes on the table. I had 20 kinds of dishes.

焼酎たくさん飲みました。

チュク(お粥) : 韓国のお粥は種類が様々。ある本によればその数は40種ほどにもなると言います。今回出されたのはサッパリした甘さが特徴の「かぼちゃ粥」でした。

Chuk (porridge): There are many kinds of porridge in Korea. Apparently there are 40 kinds. I had the “pumpkin porridge” which had light sweetness.

九節板（クジョルパン）: 宮中式九節板は、 糸のように細く切った8種類の具とクレープ生地を9つに分かれた8角形の容器に盛り合わせた料理。真ん中のクレーープ生地に周りの具を包み、食べます。

Gujeolpan (nine-sectioned dish)： This royal dish consists of 8 varieties of food all chopped finely, seasoned, and cooked. They are placed separately in the nine-sectioned platter with a wheat pancake located in the center. Take a wheat pancake and place a small amount of the 8 varieties of food on the pancake. Then simply role up and enjoy this scrumptious dish with a bit of sauce.

チャプチェ: 春雨の炒め物。柔らかくもどした春雨と、細切りにした牛肉、同じく細切りにしたニンジン、タマネギ、ホウレンソウなどの野菜、シイタケやシメジ、キクラゲなどのキノコ類をゴマ油で炒めあわせ、醤油、食塩、砂糖などで甘辛く味をつける。

Japchae (also spelled jabchae or chapchae): is made from cellophane noodles(called dang myeon), stir fried in sesame oil with sliced beef and various vegetables (typically thinly-sliced carrots, onion, spinach, and mushrooms), flavored with soy sauce, and sweetened with sugar.

ハチミツ＆生高麗人参、銀杏、胡桃 ：6年の間育てられた高麗人参が生で出されます。 一緒に出されるハチミツに付けて食べます。

Honey & Ginseng, Ginko fruit and walnuts: Ginseng which was grown for 6 years are sliced and served with honey. Dip the ginseng into honey.











ホンオフェ（写真上部にあるお魚の刺身）: ガンギエイの身を壷などに入れて醗酵を促進させたものの切り身。本場ものは凄まじいアンモニア臭がし、醗酵させればさせるほど身が柔らかくなり、美味とされる。なお、そのアンモニア臭から外国人や初心者には敬遠されるが、韓国では高級食品のひとつ。一度このホンオフェについてのドキュメンタリーを見て、食べてみたいと思っていたものでした。私は豚肉のローストと一緒に食べて、おいしいと思いました。

Hongeohoe (the sliced fish which is on the top of the photo): is fermented skate fish sashimi. The local ones have strong ammonia smell and the more fermented the more fish meat becomes soft and delicious. Due to this ammonia smell many foreigners become awkward to eat but it’s one of the Korean delicacies. I have seen a documentary about how to make this Hongeohoe and I wanted to try it. I had it with roasted pork and found it quite delicious.

カルビ: 朝鮮語で肋骨（あばら）を意味し、その周辺に付いている肉、ばら肉の事を言う。

Galbi or kalbi is made from beef short ribs, though it can also be made with pork ribs. The ribs are marinated in a sauce made from fruit juice (generally Asian pear juice), rice wine, soy sauce, garlic, sesame seed oil and sugar. Most recipes contain these basic ingredients, although many variations exist, including clear marinades and spicier marinades.

一番おいしかったのは、一番最後に出て来た生蟹の醤油漬けでした。蟹の卵の所にご飯を入れて食べるように教えてくれました。蟹は甘海老のような甘さで、蟹の卵ごはん最高でした。すごいご馳走で、皇帝になった気分でした。焼酎で気持ち良く酔っぱらっていた同僚のおじさん達は韓国美人が待つ夜の世界へ消えて行きました。私は翌日、朝４時に起きて、海雲台(Haeunda)のビーチを散歩しました。海産物を頂きながら一杯飲める屋台がたくさんあり、夜は楽しそうだと想像しました。１時間散歩した後、エアポートバスで空港に向かいました。

The best one was the last one which was soy sauce pickled raw crab. I was told to put rice into the egg shell part. The crab was sweet like raw shrimp and rice with crab eggs was splendid. I had an amazing feast and felt as if I were an emperor. My co-working dudes were happily drunk with Korean soju (rice wine) and disapeared into the darkness where Korean beauties were waiting.I got up at 4 in the early morning and walked around the Haeunda beach. There were many stalls where you can eat seafood over drinks. I imagine it would be fun to come here in the evenings. Next is my visit to Japan after 6 years. After one hour walk I headed to the airport by an airport bus.

12年ぶりのソウルです。ソウルは人口約１千万人。バンクーバーの５倍の人口ですね。宿泊先のホテルに到着して、まず最初にしたことは韓国のビールを飲んだことでした。韓国の3大ビール,　OB, Hite, Cass, を試した結果、Cassビールが私のお気に入りとなりました。 

I visited Seoul 12 years ago. Seoul’s population is 1 million. It’s 5 times more than Vancouver’s population. Arriving at the hotel where I was going to stay, the first thing I did was drinking Korean beer. I tried major three brands of Korean beer, OB, Hite, and Cass. Cass became my favourite.

 

この晩は時間があったので、ソウルに住んでいる友達に10年ぶりに会いました。インサドンという、骨董品店が多いおしゃれな街に連れて行ってもらい、ドンドンジュという甘酒のようなお酒をご馳走になりました。楽しい時でしたが、写真撮るの忘れてました。翌日、早朝に起床し、釜山へ飛びました。

I had a free time in the evening and I saw my friend who lives in Seoul. I hadn’t seen him for 10 years. He took me to a pretty town called Insadong where there are many antique shops. We drank a kind of rice wine called Don-Don-Ju which was very nice. I had a fun time, but I forgot to take photos. I got up very early next morning and flew to Busan.
