Good things in Vancouver

快晴の天気が続いているバンクーバーですが、昨日の夕方は雲が現れて綺麗でした。

今晩はバンクーバーでCritical Mass があります。これは１９９０年にサンフランシスコで始まったイベントで、毎月自転車で市の主要道路を集団になって走り、サイクリストの権利を主張します。バンクーバーでは6月が自転車に乗ろう月間となっているので、今月のCritical Massがバンクーバーでは一番大きいものとなります。午後6時にVancouver Art Gallery (Georgia Street側)を出発するので、行きましょう！

It has been fine weather in Vancouver but we had some beautiful clouds in the afternoon.

There is a Critical Mass in Vancouver tonight.  Critical Mass is an event which began in San Francisco in 1990.  Cyclists take main roads of the city and cycle in a mass to insist cyclists’ rights.  June is a bike month in Vancouver, therefore this month’s Critical Mass will be the biggest of the year.  The mass is leaving from Vancouver Art Gallery (Georgia Street side) at 6 pm.  Let’s go!

母と東の方へ１週間ほど旅に出かけてきます。
I am going for a trip to the east with my mum for a week.

この休暇で初めてサーフィンとシーカヤックをしました。サーフィンはInner Surf Rhythmの３時間レッスンを受けました。Long Beachに集合し、ウェットスーツに着替え、サーフボードを持っていざビーチへ。トレイナーのCraigとAshley↓はとても親切に教えてくれました。最初はサーフボードにうつ伏せに乗ったまま、波に乗る練習です。CraigとAshleyの指導のおかげで、波に乗ることができました。波に乗っている時は魔法の絨毯に乗っている気分でした。途中休憩に入り、Ashleyがストレッチのためにヨガを教えてくれました。次はボードに立つ練習です。これが難しい！陸上での練習でさえ難しかった、海では到底無理でした。またチャレンジしたいので、それまでに体を鍛えておきたいと思います。サーフィン、最高に楽しかったです。

I tried surfing and sea kayaking for the first time during this holiday.  We took a 3 hours surfing lesson hosted by Inner Surf Rhythm.  We assembled at the Long Beach and wore wet suits and headed to the beach with a surfboard.  Trainers, Craig and Ashley↓ instructed us very carefully.  First, we practiced to be on a wave by lying on my stomach on the surfboard.  Thanks for Craig and Ashley, I was able to catch a wave.  I felt like as if I were on a magic carpet when I was on the wave.  We had a break in between.  Ashley taught us yoga to stretch our body.  Then we practiced how to stand on the board.  This was difficult!  Since it was already difficult to practice it on the land, it was impossible to do it in the sea.  I would love to challenge to do this again, so I will train my body by then.  Surfing was so much fun.

シーカヤックは熊をみるためのツアーを選びました。３時間Uclueletの港を廻りました。インストラクターのLesley↓はカヤックの操縦方法を丁寧に教えてくれました。最初にカヤックに乗った時は転覆しそうで怖かったですが、すぐに慣れることができました。Lesleyは動物がいるスポットに連れて行ってくれ、先に紹介したように色んな動物が見れました；ハゲ鷹、クロ熊、トドなど。トドはフレンドリーな動物なので、すごい近くまで寄ってきて、焦りました。小川を登って小さな滝も見れました。自然の風景を水上から楽しみとても平静な気分でした。シーカヤックもまたやりたいです。 

We chose a sea kayak tour for watching bears.  We kayaked around the Ucluelet inner harbour for 3 hours. Our instructor, Lesley↓ taught us how to operate kayaks thoroughly.  I was bit scared to be overturned when I first got into the kayak but I got used to it.  Lesley took us sights where animas were.  As I introduced before, I was able to see many animals like bald eagles, a black bear and sea lions.  Sea lions are very friendly animal and they came very near to us which made me a bit panic.  We also kayaked a little stream and saw a little waterfall.  I enjoyed looking at the scenery of the nature on the water and felt very tranquil.  I also want to do sea kayaking again.

休暇中たくさんの動物に遭遇しました。バルコニーでＢＢＱをしていると狸が寄ってきました。

We encountered many animals during the holiday.  This racoon came close by when we were having BBQ.

Ucluelet 村を歩いていると鹿が私達の前を横切っていきました。

This deer was crossing the street when we were walking around Ucluelet village. 

 この鳥はＢＣ州の鳥、Steller’s Jayです。賢そうな鳥でした。

This bird is a Steller’s Jay which is the bird of BC province. They looked smart.

ハゲ鷹もたくさんいました。 ハゲ鷹の巣も見ることができました。ハゲ鷹は一雌一雄制で一人のパートナーと生涯を共に暮らします。巣はボルクスワーゲンのビートルの大きさになるそうです。この巣はまだ3年ほどしか経っていないそうなので、新婚さんですね。

There were many bald eagles.  We were able to see their nest as well.  Bald eagles are monogamous and spend the whole of their lives with a single partner. Their nest can grow the size of Volkswagen Beetles. This nest is apparently only a few years old so they are newly married.
 

カナダでびっくりしたのは、ナメクジです。このナメクジはそんなに大きくないですが、一度足のサイズぐらいの巨大ナメクジを見たことがあります。こんな模様のナメクジもいますし、ダースベータみたいな真っ黒のナメクジもいます。先日、David Attenboroughのナメクジのドキュメンタリーを見ました。ナメクジは両性具有で、受精にはもう一人のナメクジが必要だそうです。このドキュメンタリーでナメクジの交尾を初めて見ました。とても神秘的でした。その様子はこちらで見れます。ナメクジはあまり好きではありませんでしたが、今はかわいいと思います。

The thing I was astonished by in Canada was the slugs. Although this slug is not so big, one time I saw a slug here the length of my foot. There are slugs with this pattern and others are black like Darth Vader. I watched a documentary by David Attenborough the other day. Slugs are hermaphrodites and need a partner to fertilize. I saw slugs mating for the first time. It was very mystic. You can watch the mating here. I thought I didn’t like slugs but now I think they are quite pretty.

こちらのトドさん達は港でお昼寝をしていました。トドの鳴き声の真似が上手に出来る様になりました。

These sea lions were having a nap on the harbour. I can imitate Sea lions crying very well now.  

この休暇のハイライトはこの黒熊との遭遇でした。この写真ではこの熊が見え難い（ってか全然見えてない？）ですが、海岸線で蟹を穫っていました。ノースバンクーバーにはたくさん熊がいると聞くので、行きません。

The highlight of the holiday was this encounter with a black bear. It’s difficult to see the bear in this photo (almost impossible?) but he or she was trying to catch crabs on the shoreline. I hear there are lots of bears in North Vancouver, so I don’t go there so much.

Horseshoe BayからフェリーでNanaimoに向かう。所要時間は２時間。
We headed by ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo. It took 2 hours.

宿泊先があるUcluelet (呼称：Ukee）へ行く途中、Port Alberniの手前でCathdral Trailに寄る。１０分程で歩けるトレイルがあり、そこに800歳の木がある。

On the way to our accommodation in Ucluelet (nickname: Ukee), we stopped at Cathedral Trail just before Port Alberni. There is a trail you can walk in 10 minutes and there’s a 800 years old tree there.

その木の前でバイカーカップルに写真を撮るのを頼まれる。二つのカメラが私と夫に渡された。いいアングルで撮れるように屈むと、「君たち、プロだね〜。」と彼らは言った。

In front of the tree we were asked to take pictures by these biker couples. Two cameras were handed over to me and my husband. We were kneeling down to get a good angle and they said; “You guys are professional!”

Country Candyに寄る。トフィー付ポップコーンを買う。おいしかったのですが、大きすぎました。小さいサイズを買っておけばよかった。

We stopped at Country Candy and bought toffied pop corn. It was delicious but too big. I should have bought the smaller size.

Port Alberniを通過し、Ucluletまではぐねぐねの山道が続く。この道は運転するのが難しかった。Nanaimoから２時間半後、Uclueletに着いた。

We passed through Port Alberni and we drove the winding road all the way to Ucluelet. The road was very difficult to drive. After two and half hours from Nanaimo, we arrived in Ucluelet.
