Good things in Vancouver

バンクーバー島のトフィーノへ１週間行ってきます。
I am going away to Tofino in Vancouver Island for one week.

Arthur Ericksonが設計し、1980年に建設されたEvergreen Buildingの取り壊しについて以前記事を書きました。それ以来このビルの前を通るたびに胸が痛みました。ところが、この取り壊しが撤回されたことを昨日知りました！

市の議会書によると、建物は重要な文化財であり、保存のために市は必要な助成金を出すと提示しました。この建物のオーナーには二つのオプションが提案され、住居用に５階分建て増しするか、商業用に建て増しなしで維持するかのどちらかだそうです。どちらにしてもこの建物が保存されることになったのでとても嬉しいです。

5月27日（土）からArthur Erickson展がバンクーバー美術館で開催されます。行くのが楽しみです。

I have written an article about demolition of the Evergreen Building which was constructed in 1980 and designed by Arthur Erickson.  Since then, I felt very sad every time I passed this building, however, I found out yesterday that this demolition was cancelled!

According to the City’s report, the city considered the building as an important historical building and provides compensation to assist to preserve the building.  Two options were suggested to the owner of this building; one is to add 5 stories for residential use and the other is no additional stories for commercial use.  Either way the building will be preserved and I am very happy to hear this.

Arthur Erickson exhibition will be held at the Vancouver Art Gallery from Saturday, May 27th.  I am looking forward to visiting there.

We had lunch at a Cuban restaurant called Havana on Commercial Drive.

ご飯はどれもおいしかったのですが、一番おいしかったのはこのドリンク、Mojito（モヒート）。今まで飲んだカクテルの中で一番おいしかったかもしれません。カクテルにはミント、ライム、ラムが入っていて、夏らしい味でした。
All of the food was good but the best thing was this drink called, Mojito.  It may be the best cocktail I had ever had.  The cocktail had mint, lime and rum and it tasted very summery.

There was an art gallery inside the restaurant.

バンクーバーから車で１時間程で行けるチーフ山に登ってきました。写真に見えているのは南山頂です。今回は中央山頂と北山頂を目指しました（下地図参照。地図参考文献：Bryceland, Jack. 103 hikes in southwestern British Columbia, Vancouver, Greystone Books, 1973. ISBN 1550547755)

We climbed the Chief, 1 hour drive away from Vancouver. The peak you see in the photo is the South Peak. We climbed the Centre chief and the North chief this time (please refer to the map below. Referred from the book by Bryceland, Jack. 103 hikes in southwestern British Columbia, Vancouver, Greystone Books, 1973. ISBN 1550547755)

勾配度がきつかったです。チーフ山は世界で２番目に大きい花崗岩の単体岩山だそうです。下の写真は豆サイズの母。

It was very steep. The Chief is the second largest granite monolith. The below photo is the bean size mum.

中央山頂に到着！休憩をとる。
We arrived at the Centre Chief. We had a break.

シマリス!
It’s a chipmunk!

一緒に山登りをしたMr. Kはシマリス磁石ということが分かる。それも２匹だし！私もした〜い(T0T)。
We found out that Mr. K who climbed together was a chipmunk magnet. He got TWO chipmunks. I wanna do it (T0T).

できました！至福の時！
I did it! Supreme happiness!

北山頂に向かって出発！
We headed to the North Peak!

中央山頂と北山頂の間のNorth Gully(北谷間）に到着。
We arrived at the North gully between the Centre peak and the North peak.

標高665mの北山頂到着。
We arrived at the North peak which height is 665m.

帰り道も険しかったです。
It was very hard to climb down as well.

雪解けの時期なのでShannon滝はお水がたくさん流れていて迫力がありました。
Since it was snow melting time the Shannon fall looked impressive with lots of water.

Howe Sound Brewingに直行。ここでは地ビールを製造しています。
We headed straight to the Howe Sound Brewing. They make their own beer.

ごはんもおいしかった！
The food was delicious!

これはMrs. Kがハイキング中に拾ったゴミ。全然そんなゴミが落ちているなんて気づかなかったです。Mrs. K尊敬。次回はゴミ拾いがんばります！

This garbage was collected by Mrs. K during her hiking. I didn’t notice any gabages on the ground. Respect to Mrs. K. I will pick up garbages next time!

フランスのドキュメンタリー映画 Etre et Avoir (英題：To be and to have、邦題：ぼくの大好きな先生）を観た。４歳から１１歳までの１３人の小学生とその先生の学校生活が８ヶ月間撮影された。小学校は南フランスの人口２００人程の村にある。この村は私達が去年行った村のすぐ近くにあると知って興奮しながら映画を観た。私が感動したのは、３５年の教師経験がある先生の指導方法。一人一人の子供たちの気持ち、興味、悩みを理解する。子供の長所を誉め、短所を認識させ、問題点があればどのように解決したら良いか一緒に考える。邦題のように、子供たちは先生が大好きだ。私もこんな先生に習いたかったな。

監督のNicolas Philibertは３００程の学校を訪問し、この学校に決めた。この映画はフランスで大ヒッしたそうだが、この成功のために、生徒のと先生が出演料を求めて監督を訴えた。このニュースを聞いてがっがりしましたが、この映画はお勧めです。

We watched a French documentary film, Etre et Avoir (English title:To be and To have, Japanese title:My favourite teacher).   The life of a teacher and 13 elementary students, aged from 4 to 11, was filmed for 8 months.  This school is located in a village of South France, where population is just over 200. I watched the film excitedly since I got to know the village was very close to the village I went last year.  What I was astonished in this film was the instruction of the teacher who had 35 years of experience.  He tried to understand each student’s feelings, interests, and worries.  He praised students’ advantage and let them acknowledge their disadvantage.  If there are problems, he discussed with the children how to solve it.  As in the Japanese title, the children love the teacher.  I wish I was taught by a teacher like him.

The director, Nicolas Philibert, visited about 300 schools and chose this school.  And this film was a huge hit in France.  However, due to this success, the teacher and the children’s family sued this director to have money.  It was quite disappointing to hear this news, but I really recommend to watch this film.
