Good things in Vancouver

今晩は待ちにまったWeakerthansのライブに行きます！前回Weakerthansがバンクーバーに来た時は、ライブに行く直前にチケットを見つけれなくて行けなかったのです。チケットが入っていた封筒をシュレッダーにかけちゃったような微かな記憶が。。。(ToT) ど、どアホ！チケットも売れ切れで、どうにもこうにも行けませんでした。今日はチケットなくしませんから！

Weakerthansはカナダのマニトバ州、Winnipegの出身。私達が好きなアルバムは「Reconstruction site」。とても聴きごごちのよいポップなロックです。ここで試聴できます。

We are going to a live concert of the Weakerthans tonight, which we’ve been longing for. Last time when the Weakerthans came to Vancouver, I could not find our tickets just before going to the live. I have vague memory of shredding the envelope… (ToT) Stupid bone head of me! Tickets were sold out and there was no way that we could go. I am NOT going to lose the tickets tonight!

The Weakerthans are from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. We like an album called “Reconstruction site”. It’s very easy listening poppy rock. You can try out songs here.

アカデミー賞にノミネートされた話題作、Sidewaysを観た。結婚直前と離婚直後の男性２人がカリフォルニアのワイナリー巡り旅行に出かけ、旅の途中、女性２人に遭遇する。ワインの話もたくさん出てくる。ドライな恋愛物語。監督のAlexander Payneは2002年にAbout Schmidtを監督している。あれも結構リアルな映画だった。主演俳優のPaul Giamattiは、良い俳優だ、と思う。

We watched a film, Sideways, which is much talked about and was nominated for Academy awards. Two men, one is about to marry and the other was recently divorced, go for a trip to visit wineries in California, and they encounter two ladies during the trip. There is lots of talk about wine. It’s like a very dry love story. The director, Alexander Payne directed “About Schmidt” in 2002, which was also quite realistic film. The main actor, Paul Giamatti, is a great actor, I think.

今日は「ジーンズの日」。平日にジーンズを穿けるのはうれしい。これはＢＣ洲小児病院への寄付金を集めるイベント。５ドル（約４００円）のバッチを買って、その収益金は病院へ寄付される。去年は620,000カナダドル（約５千万円）集まった。

Today is “Jeans Day”. It’s nice to wear jeans on a weekday. This event is a fund raising for BC Children’s hospital. You buy a badge/button which costs $5 and the money is donated to the hospital. CD$640,000 was raised last year.

日が長くなり、外はまだ明るい。明るいと人は外に出るみたい。今晩私達も外に出た。私はローラーブレードで、彼はジョギングに。私は数ヶ月ローラーブレードをしていなかった。ローラーブレードを履いて滑り始めた途端、コケる！お尻を痛めたが、ローラーブレードを続ける。スタンレー公園にはたくさんの人がいた。↑は最初のスナップショット。

The days are getting longer and it’s still bright outside. It seems people go outside when it’s bright. We went outside tonight too. I went for rollerblading, and he went jogging. I hadn’t rollerbladed for a few months. I put skates on and as soon as I started rollerblading, I fell over! My ass got hurt, but I continued rollerblading. Lots of people were in the Stanley park. ↑This one is the first snap shot.

毎日何気なく前を歩いていた消防署。よく見ると、“Heritage Building” だった。Heritage Buildingは現在バンクーバーに2,500程ある。Heritage Building とは築２０年以上で文化的伝統価値を持っていると Heritage 委員会に認定された建物。Heritage Building はこのようなパネルが組み込まれていて、建物の歴史的背景を読むことが出来る。それによれば、この消防署は1907年に建設され、北米で一番最初の消防車を格納できる消防署だそうだ。もうすぐ、１００歳ですねぇ。１世紀に渡り、お疲れ様です!

I pass by this fire hall every day without paying much attention. I had a close look and found it was a “Heritage Building”. There are about 2,500 heritage buildings in Vancouver. Heritage buildings are more than 20 years old and they are approved by the Heritage commission for its heritage value. Heritage buildings have this kind of panels and you can read the building’s historical background. According to the panel, this fire station was built in 1907 and it is the first fire hall in North America designed to accommodate motor vehicles. The building is going to be 100 years old soon. Thanks for serving the community over a century!

秋田に帰省している叔母が写メールを送ってくれた。「ばっけ」取りしてるそうだ。「ばっけ」とは秋田で「ふきのとう」のこと。英語ではbutterbur scape。秋田の県花だそうです。璃子さんのブログに素敵なばっけの写真があった（叔母の写真も素敵だよぉ）。

My aunt who is now in her hometown, Akita, sent us a photo from her mobile. She said she was picking Bakke. Bakke is Fukinoto in Akita dialect. English name is butterbur scape. Apparently this butterbur scape is Akita’s prefecture flower. You can see pretty pictures of Bakke in Riko-san’s blog (My aunt’s photo is pretty too).

あ〜ぁ、私も秋田でばっけとりしたいなぁ。
I wish I were picking Bakke in Akita.
