Good things in Vancouver

ビクトリアでハーフマラソン走ってきました。当日は雨で寒く最悪のコンディションでした。自己記録1時間54分は破れませんでしたが、３度目のビクトリアハーフマラソンでは一番良いタイムでした。初出場の友人達も目標のタイムを達成し、とても喜んでいました。

I ran the half marathon in Victoria. On that event day, it was the worst condition. It was rainy and cold. I could not beat my personal best time which is 1 hour and 54 minutes but my time was the best of the three times I participated in the Victoria Half Marathon. My friends who ran the half for the first time achieved their goal time and they were chuffed.


  

宿泊したのはSwans Hotel。1階には地ビールを作っているパブや販売店があり、最高でした。街中にあって、キッチン付、朝食付きでとても便利でした。

We stayed at the Swans Hotel. The best thing was they had a brew pub and liquor shop downstairs. It was very convenient that the hotel was located in downtown and it had kitchen and the breakfast was served.




ハーフマラソンを走ったMr. Sはデザートの係りでした。Mr. Sはホテル周辺を探し回り、La Collinaというベーカリーでパンプキンパイをゲットしました。感謝祭（今年は10月9日）にパンプキンパイを食べますが、今まで食べたパンプキンパイの中で一番美味しかったです。

Mr. S who ran the half was in charge of desserts. He looked hard around the hotel and he got the pumpkin pie from a bakery called La Collina. Pumpkin pies are eaten during Thanks Giving (Oct 9th this year) and this pumpkin pie was the bet I had ever had.




チャイナタウンで見つけた裏通り、Fan Tan Alley。こんな狭い路地にいろんなお店がありました。ビクトリアはオリジナルグッズを販売するお店がたくさんあるので、ショッピングが楽しいです。

This is Fan Tan Alley which we found in China town. There were many shops in this small alley. It’s fun to shop in Victoria because there are many small shops which have original goods.




みんな筋肉痛でロボットのように歩きながら、帰りのバスに乗り込みました。ハロウィーン用だと思われるかぼちゃがたくさん見えました。

We all walked like robots due to muscle aches and got on a bus to go home. I saw the pumpkins which presumably for Halloween.

翌朝、私と夫はサイクリングに出かけました。サイクリングの途中で、「山頂：眺めのいいポイント」という標識を見たので、登ってみることにしました。すぐ山頂に着くだろうと思っていたら、４０分かかりました。頂上まで登った価値はありました。眺めは最高でした。山を降りてキャンプ場に戻り、ブランチを済ませ、自転車でフリスビーゴルフ場へ走りました。今年は夫がフリスビーゴルフ用のフリスビーを１枚購入し、意気込みは満々でした。ゲームの途中で、次にプレーしている人達が私達のことを待っている様子でしたので、ゴルフのように先に行ってもらいました。彼らのプレーはプロ並みでした。これを機会にバンクーバーでもフリスビーゴルフやってみようかなと思っています。クィーン・エリザベスパークでできますね。

My husband and I went cycling in the next morning. During cycling, we saw a sign “Summit: View Point” and we headed to climb to the top. We thought it would take minutes to go to the top but in fact it took 40 minutes. It was worth climbing to the top. The view was wonderful. We climbed down and cycled back to our camp site and finished brunch, then cycled to frisbee golf place. This year my husband bought a proper frisbee for frisbee golf and he was eager to play. During the game, the group behind us were catching us up so we asked them to go first like you do in golf. They played like professionals. Taking this opportunity, we are thinking of playing frisbee golf in Vancouver. You can play in the Queen Elizabeth park.

私達のラウンドでは夫が勝ち、帰る途中パブで夕食をとり、フェリー乗り場までサイクリング。幸運なことに、フェリー乗り場からキラーホエール（シャチ）を見ることができました。10頭ぐらいのキラーホエールがジャンプしたり、ひっくりかえったりしながら、泳いでいました。フェリーに乗ってからも、キラーホエールの群れがいて、フェリーの横を泳いでいくのが見えました。とても興奮しました。バンクーバーに戻って、家に着いたのは真夜中でした。次の日の出社は辛かったです。(写真をクリックすると大きいサイズの写真でキラーホエールが見えます。）

In our team, my husband won the game. On the way back, we had another meal at the pub and cycled back to the ferry terminal. Fortunately we saw killer whales when were waiting for a ferry at the ferry terminal. About ten killer whales were swimming, jumping or rolling over. Even when we got on the ferry, we could see them swimming next to our ferry. It was so exciting. We went back to Vancouver and we got to home midnight. It was hard to work next day. 去年参加したPender Islandのフリスビーゴルフコンペに今年も参加しました。今年は前夜にキャンプすることに計画。バンクーバーからフェリーで渡り、島へ到着すると自転車でキャンプ場へ行きました。キャンプ場はパブで、１泊１テント15ドル（1500円）。食事はパブで食べるので、食事を作らなくていい、楽ちんキャンプでした。夜、芝生に寝転んで、満天の星を眺めながらビールを飲みました。暫くすると、みんな寝入ってしまいましたが、震える寒さで目が覚めました。

We participated in a frisbee competition in Pender Island which we also joined last year. This year, we planned to camp on the previous night. We took a ferry from Vancouver and after arriving at the island, we cycled to the camp site. Our camp site was a pub which rented us the site for $15 per tent. We ate at the pub so it was easy peasy camping that didn’t require any cooking. At night we laid ourselves on the ground and drank beer watching countless stars in the sky. After a while we fell asleep but woke up shivering cold.

一緒にキャンプしたK夫婦です。一枚目は失敗したので、二枚目のためにもう一度チューしてくれました。ご協力ありがとうございます。

This is Mr. & Mrs. K who camped together. My first shot failed, so they kissed for the second shot again. Thanks for your cooperation.

みんな小石投げ（英語ではSkipping Stonesって言うんですが、日本語でも名前があったような。。。）が上手でした。

Everybody was good at skipping stones.

叔父さんがおされなディナーに連れて行ってくれました(T0T)。ここは三条御幸町の近くですが、この辺は私が京都の高校へ通っていた頃と較べて、とても変わっていました。

My uncle took me to a cool restaurant for dinner(T0T).  The restaurant is located near Sanjyo Gokoumachi but the neighbourhood changed so much from the time when I used to a high school nearby.

目に美しく、口に美味しいお料理でした。幸せな気分で、お店を出ると、叔父さんが、「じゃ、もう一軒一杯いこか？」と祇園に連れて行ってくれました。祇園で一番有名なお茶屋さん、「一力」の前で叔父さんが車を停めるとちょうど芸者さんがいました。

The dinner was delicious for my mouth and beautiful for my eyes.  We left the restaurant in a happy mood, then my uncle said, “Let’s go to a bar to have a drink” and he took us to Gion, an old district of Kyoto.  He stopped his car in front of the most famous tea house in Gion called Ichiriki and I saw one Geisha.

叔父さんの知り合いの方がやっていらっしゃるバーはこれまた、おされなバーでした。メニューはなく、自分がどんなカクテルを飲みたいかを言います。カクテルはIittala や Kosta Bodaの美しいグラスで運ばれて来ました。叔父さんに色んな所に連れて行ってもらえて興奮でした。叔父さん家族と一緒にとても幸せな時でした。

The bar that is ran by my uncle’s friend is also a cool bar. There was no menus, then you have to tell what kind of cocktail you would like to drink. The cocktails came in a beautiful glasses, like Iittala or Kosta Boda. I was so excited my uncle took me to many cool places. I had a very happy time being with my uncle’s family together.

日本での２日間はあっと言う間に終わりました。関西空港でバンクーバーへ帰る飛行機を待ちました。関西空港はイタリアの建築家、Renzo Pianoが設計しました。パリのPompidou Centreも彼の設計です。そういえば、似ていますね。

My 2 days stay in Japan was finished so quickly. I waited for an aeroplane to return to Vancouver at the Kansai airport. The airport is designed by an Italian architect, Renzo Piano. He also designed Ponpidou Centre in Paris. They both look similar.

日本に帰りました。関西空港から京都の叔母の家までMK Taxiを使いました。タクシーは８人乗りのミニバンで、乗り換えとかしなくていいので楽チンでした。片道３,０００円。２時間程で懐かしい京都市内に着きました。車から写真を撮りました。といってもあまり京都らしくない写真ですが。。。

I went back to Japan.  I took a MK taxi from the Kansai airport to my aunt’s house in Kyoto.   The taxi was a mini van which you share with about 7 other people.  It was a very easy travel since I didn’t need to change trains or buses.  It costed 3,000 yen ($30).  After about 2 hours, I arrived at my familiar city, Kyoto.  I took pictures from the mini van.  Please note I only took photos of residential areas of the city. 

MK Taxiはサービスがとても良く感動しました。運転手さんに写真撮ってもいいですかと聞きました。写真を撮られるのは初めてですと運転手さんはカメラに向ってスマイルしてくれました。

I was so impressed with MK taxi’s service.  I asked the driver if I could take a picture of him.  He said this is my first time to be asked for photos then he smiled at my camera. 

到着して速攻食べに行った物はというと。。。やっぱし回転寿司（ウィズ　ビアー）。

The thing I ate as soon as I arrived was… Of course Kaiten sushi (with beer).  (Kaiten means “rotating” and normally 1 plate costs $1)
