Good things in Vancouver

最近天気がいいので、B C Binningのモザイクの写真を撮りに昼休み散歩に出かけた。Bertram Charles Binning (Feb 10, 1909 – Mar 16, 1968) はバンクーバーで活躍した画家、建築家、教育者である。彼はブリティッシュコロンビア大学の現代美術学科の創設者でもある。この記事によると、1941年に自分の家を設計し、プライウッドなどの経済的な材料を使い5000ドルで建設した。ミッドセンチュリーモダンな素敵なお家であるが、当時は先駆的すぎて家に見物人がたくさん来たそうだ。その家の建設を手がけた、C E PrattとR A D Berwickと一緒にCIBCビルやBC Electric Building等の他の建築物をデザインした。上のモザイク画が今でも飾られている、CIBCビル（地図) - 今はドラッグストアになっている。きっとＢＣ州の経済を絵に表したんだと思う。下の写真はBC Electric Building（地図）で手前にはユニークな形の発電所が潜んでいる。ここのダイヤモンド柄のモザイクもBinningがデザインした。

The weather has been fantastic recently and I went for a walk during my lunch break to take pictures of mosaic by B C Binning. Bertram Charles Binning (Feb 10, 1909 – Mar 16, 1968) was a painter, architect and educator who played an active part in Vancouver. He was also a founder of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia. According to this article, he designed his own house in 1941 and built with $5,000 by using economical building materials such as plywood. It’s a very nice mid-century modern house, but at that time the house looked so ahead of time and there were always people came to see the house. The architects, C E Pratt and R A D Berwick, who constructed the house, designed other buildings with Binning such as the CIBC building and the BC Electric Building. The above is the mosaic artwork done by Binning which is still exhibited in the CIBC building (map) – now it’s a drug store. I believe the mosaic expresses the economy of British Columbia. The below is the BC Electric Building (map) and there is a power station next to it, uniquely hidden in the building. Binning also designed the diamond shape mosaic of this building.

ネットで調べていると、彼らがデザインした家を1ヶ月3千ドルで借りれる不動産屋を見つけた。長期休暇にこんなところに滞在するのもいいかもしれない。タイムリーなことに今、バンクーバー美術館でB C Binningの展覧会が4月29日まで開催されている。行きたい、行きたい。

I found a real estate agency where you can rent a house designed by Binning - $3000 for one month. It might be nice to stay in such place for a long holiday. Timely speaking, an exhibition of Binning is currently held in the Vancouver Art Gallery until April 29th. I would love to go.

Eastside Culture Crawl に行ってきました。1000 Parker Streetにあるビルには迷路のようにアーティスト達のアトリエがあり、３日間パブリックに解放されました。そのビルだけでなく、周辺にもたくさんのアトリエがあり、来年はゆっくりと周りたいなと思います。

We went to Eastside Culture Crawl. In the building at 1000 parker street, there were so many painters’ ateliers like a maze and these ateliers were opened for publis for three days. There were many other ateliers near the building. I would like to take more time next year to visit all of these.

この女の子は自分の馬のために、絵を描いて売っていました。

The girl was selling her paintings for her horse.

各アトリエにはアーティストがいて説明してくれたりします。絵も直接購入することができます。

There are artists in each atelier and they explain their paintings. You can also purchase the paintings directly.

入れ墨肌着みたいなのもありました。これを着ている人を見ましたが、本当に入れ墨してるみたいでした。

There was a shop which was selling a tatoo wear. I saw people with this clothes and they really looked like they had tatoos.

絵だけではなく、木工のアーティスト達もたくさんいました。すごい機械がたくさんありました。

Not only paintings, there were also woodwork artists as well - They had lots of heavy duty machines.

Vancouver this morning…

9月23日（土）、日系へリテージセンターに漫才師、内海桂子（うつみ　けいこ）さんの公演に行った。漫才は二人でするもの、しかし、相方の内海好江さんは10年程前に他界された。なので、どんな公演になるんだろうと思っていた。

内海桂子さんは1922年生まれで、現在84歳。公演が始まり、彼女が会場へ入場してきたとき、ぶったまげた。優雅な笑顔で、力強くきびきびと歩いてステージに上がり、ずっと立ったまま公演された。とても素晴らしく見えた。24歳年下の旦那さんがいるのも納得できた。

彼女は漫才師になった経緯について面白可笑しく語ってくれた。俳句のような都々逸を三味線をひきながら唄ったり、昔の洒落の歌などを聞かせてくれた。日本舞踊も踊ってくれた。とても楽しくて時間はあっとい間に過ぎた。１時間の公演だったはずが、１時間４０分楽しませてくれた。彼女がバンクーバーに来たのは、バンクーバーの友人から頼まれたからだそうだ。なので、ノーギャラで、飛行機代を自前で払って遥々来てくれた。なんというエンターテイナーなんでしょう！行ってよかったです（お母さん、招待してくれてサンクス！）。84歳になれたら、彼女のように前向きに楽しく生きたいです。

I went to see a show by a Japanese Manzai performer, Ms. Keiko Utsumi at Nikkei Heritage Center on Saturday, September 23rd. Manzai is performed by two people, but her partner, Ms. Yoshie Utsumi passed away about 10 years ago. So I was wondering how the show was going to be.

Ms. Keiko Utsumi was born in 1922 and now she is 84. The show started, and I was blown away when I saw her coming to the the stage. She walked straight strongly and lively, and she stood up for the entire time. She looked great. I could understood why she has a 24 years younger husband.

She started to talk about how she became a Manzai performer with lots of jokes. She read Dodoitsu like Haiku with playing Shamisen, and then, sang old Manzai songs. She performed Japanese traditional dance. It was so much fun and the time flew so quickly. The show was going to be one hour but she entertained us for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Apparently, she came to Vancouver since her friend in Vancouver asked her to. She performed without any money, and paid her own flight to come all the way. What an entertainer! I was very lucky to see her (Thanks for inviting me to the show, mum!). I want to live with fun and positve attitude like she does if I get to 84.

前回は笑っている赤ちゃんのポスターでしたが、今回は男の子です！一体誰の作品なんでしょうと気になっていましたが、前回はネットで検索しても何も出てきませんでした。今回再度ポスターに右下に書かれている 「Portraits by Paulino」で検索してみると、この画家さんのサイトがでてきました！サイトはまだ建設中なのですが、サイトがドイツ語でも書かれていること、画家さんは男性であるということが判りました。次は何になるのか楽しみだなぁ。

The last time was the smiley baby’s portrait, but this time it’s a boy! I was wondering whose work this was but I could not find any on the net last time. I searched the words again, “Portraits by Paulino”, written on the right bottom corner of the poster. Then I found the artist’s site! Although the site is under construction but I found the site was also written in Germany and the artist is a male. I am looking foward to what is going to be next.

私の元上司は芸術を愛する素敵なおじさんです。たくさんのミュージカルに連れて行ってくれたり、私とハニーをサイモン＆ガーファンクルのシアトルでのコンサートに招待して下さいました。彼がこの日本人芸術家、レオナルド藤田嗣治（つぐはる）の本を送ってくれました。表紙を見た時、この男性が明治時代の日本男児とは信じられませんでした。だって、イヤリング、ブレスレット、指輪をつけているんですもの！

My ex boss is a really nice guy who loves arts. He used to take me to many musicals and he invited me and my honey to go to Simon & Garfunkel’s concert in Seattle. He sent me this book about a Japanese painter, Tsuguharu Leonard Foujita. When I looked at the front cover, I could not believe this guy was a Japanese man from the Meiji era. Because he was wearing an earring, a bracelet, and a ring！

藤田は1886年に日本で生まれ、２６歳の時に美術を勉強するためにパリへ渡った。彼は今やとても有名なモジリアーニ、スーチン、ピカソ、マチスなどと深い交流を持った。彼のアパートにはお湯の出るお風呂があったので、たくさんのモデルが彼の元を訪れ、お返しに彼のモデルをした。そのなかの一人がキキであった。彼はキキをモデルに「Nu couché à la toile de Jouy」を描いたことにより、彼は有名になった。彼はとても有名になり当時パリにいた日本人はいつも藤田を知っているかと聞かれたほどだった。１９３９年に彼は日本に帰り、「兵士に勇気を与える」戦争画を書くことを政府に頼まれる。彼は献身的にたくさんの絵を書いたが、第二次世界大戦が終わった頃には、彼は戦犯だと非難された。結局1070人の戦犯には一人も画家の名前はなかったが、藤田は傷つき、裏切られたと感じた。彼は日本を大変愛したが、フランスに戻り帰化し、カソリック教徒となった。レオナルドはレオナルド・ダ・ビンチからとったカソリック名である。彼の最後の作品はフランスにあるランスという街にある教会の建設と、教会内のフレスコ画だった。完成の３ヵ月後彼は他界し、彼のお墓はその教会にある。

Foujita was born in 1886 in Japan and went to Paris to study painting when he was 26. He became close friends with artists such as Modigliani, Soutine, Picasso, Matisse, who are now very famous. Lots of models visited him since he had a hot bath tub in his apartment and they modeled for him in return. One of them was Kiki. He painted her in “Nu couché à la toile de Jouy” and it made him famous. He became so famous that every Japanese people in Paris at that time were asked if they knew Foujita. In 1939, he went back to Japan and asked by the government to do war paintings which “give courage to Japanese soldiers”. He devoted himself for this task but by the time the WWII finished, he was blamed that he was a war criminal. Although no artists were in 1070 war criminals at the end, Foujita was hurt and felt betrayed. He really loved Japan but he went back to France and took French nationality and became Catholic. Leonard is his Catholic name, taken from Leonard De Vinci. His last work is to build and paint a chapel in a town called Reims in France. He passed away three months after the completion of the last work and he was buried at the chapel.

この本を読んで彼が自分のオリジン（起源）を忘れずにオリジナリティ（独創力）を追求した偉大な国際的な日本人だったということを学んだ。また、彼はとても思いやりのある人だった。将来、世界の国々に存在する彼の作品を見てみたい。藤田と同じオリジンを共有することを誇りに思う。

I learnt from this book he was a great international Japanese artist who sought his own originality without forgetting his origin. He also was a very thoughtful person. In future, I would like to see many of his paintings which exists in many countries across the world. I feel proud that I share the same origin with Foujita.
